Utilities and the Mid-Atlantic region's electricity grid operator are urging residents to conserve electricity as a wave of frigid cold bears down on the area.
PJM Interconnection, the electricity grid operator for more than 61 million people in 13 states and the District of Columbia, said Monday that it is managing a tight power supply as single-digit temperatures are expected to hit Washington, Maryland and Delaware.
The National Weather Service is predicting temperatures to fall well below 10 degrees Monday night into Tuesday for much of the area. BGE and Pepco, utilities that serve D.C. and much of Maryland, also issued calls for conservation.
PJM asks that consumers conserve especially during peak demand hours, which are weekdays from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
