Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan called for the dismissal of the leader of Prince George’s County Public Schools Wednesday.
Hogan said it’s time for County Executive Rushern Baker to replace PGCPS CEO Kevin Maxwell. Several scandals have made headlines under Maxwell’s leadership, including founded allegations of system-wide grade tampering.
“State board of ed conducted an exhaustive investigation with an outside group … and they came back with findings of widespread mistakes and potential wrongdoing,” Hogan said.
Baker is campaigning for the Democratic Party’s nomination to run for governor and called Hogan’s statement politically motivated.
“If he really cares about the children of Prince George’s County like I do, he would actually provide the funding that we’ve been missing, close to $68 million since he’s taken office,” Baker said.
A spokesman for Baker said it’s up to the governor and his appointed state board of education to fire school superintendents in Prince George’s County, according to Maryland law.
Baker appointed Maxwell to lead the school system in 2013.
