Google Funds Over 300 Classroom Requests in D.C. Area

One art teacher in southwest D.C. got the surprise of a lifetime when a team from Google came into her classroom Thursday with all the supplies she wanted for her class.

But Greta Schorn is not the only teacher whose wish was granted.

Google says it will fund over 300 classroom requests posted on a education crowdfunding site by teachers in the Washington, D.C. area.

After surprising Schorn at Amidon-Bowen Elementary School with stacks of canvases, glue sticks and other supplies, Google announced that it would fund DonorsChoose.org projects in parts of Virginia and Maryland, in addition to D.C.

"I feel bad when a kid comes to me and say they need a glue stick, and I don't have it," Schorn said. "This is more than I could've imagined."

DonorsChoose.org is an education crowdfunding site that allows teachers to post projects and request the materials they need in their classrooms. Donors can in turn donate money towards the projects that inspire them, providing everything from books to field trips to classrooms across the country.

Since DonorsChoose.org's founding in 2000, more than a million people have donated $250 million to projects listed on the site.
