More than 3,700 flights - around one out of every 10 domestic departures - were canceled by Monday afternoon, following a weekend of travel disruption across the country. The bulk of those cancellations were in Chicago, Cleveland, New York and Boston.
"It's been one weather system after another,'' said Delta Air Lines spokesman Morgan Durrant. "It's been a challenging 72 hours.''
Even the D.C. area has been effected by cancellations. So far, 24 flight leaving Reagan National Airport and 17 flights leaving Dulles International Airport Tuesday have been canceled.
There are some things you can do to make your trip to the airport a little easier.
Before you leave for the airport, call the airline and ask for the aircraft number assigned to your flight --that's called the tail number. Then ask where is that tail number. Locating your plane gives you an idea if it's gonna make it to you.
You can also check out Flightaware.com's Misery Map. It show all significant delays affecting airports in our area.
One of the best apps to help you avoid disaster is Just Landed, which monitors flight delays, gate changes and even baggage claim information. The Flight Track5 app predicts weather-related delays before your airline announces them.
And if your flight is canceled, use Next Flight. This app will find all available flights based on your city and the day you're suppose to leave.
