Congress Can't Cut a Deal, But DC Businesses Can: Food, Drink, Entertainment Specials for the Shutdown

Congress can't cut a deal, but D.C.'s businesses sure can. Dozens of restaurants and bars are offering discounts for federal workers and the entire public for the duration of the shutdown.

Below, we've rounded up more than a dozen spots offering freebies or discounts.

Federal workers can also take advantage of Restaurant Week, with $22 lunch specials through Sunday.

Entertainment

To shutdown, or not to shutdown? The Shakespeare Theatre Company is offering 50 percent off tickets to performances of "Noura" and "Hamlet" if you use the promo code "shutdown." You'll need a federal government ID to pick up the discounted tickets, but can buy tickets to any of the shows, which will continue into March.

Food and Drinks

Taco Bamba will give you one free taco in exchange for a look at your federal government ID.

Taylor Gourmet will offer 10 percent off in-store purchases if you show a federal ID. The deal is available at locations in D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

Sugar Shack Donuts locations in Arlington, Alexandria and D.C. will give federal workers who present an ID a free coffee with any purchase.

Roofers Union Restaurant and Bar has a deal for government employees and everyone else -- because the entire D.C. region feels the impact of the shutdown, the Adams Morgan restaurant and bar announced. Starting Monday evening, two politically-themed cocktails will go on sale for $6. 

Bourbon Adams Morgan plans to rotate nightly specials until the shutdown ends.

Federalist Pig, on Columbia Road NW near 17th Street, has $3 Narragansett beers with a government ID.

The Jefferson DC has $2 baskets of fries just blocks from the Eisenhower Executive Office Building downtown.

Granville Moore's on H Street offers federal workers a 30 percent discount on draft beers until the government reopens.

Adams Morgan and Woodley Park mainstays Tryst, The DinerOpen City and Shaw's The Coupe will each offer 10 percent off for government employees.

Z-Burger is offering a free single burger per person for federal workers at their Tenleytown location (4321 Wisconsin Avenue Northwest) for those who show their government identification.

Buredo is offering a 15 percent discount to all purchases at all locations when showing a federal government ID.

Koons of Silver Spring is offering to all current a free oil change, tire rotation, and inspection on any make and model of vehicle to federal government employees.

Free wine tasting at DuCard Vineyards in Madison County, Virginia, for federal employees this weekend with government identification.

The Queen Vic on H Street is offering a 30 percent off all drafts for federal workers during the shutdown.

The Pug, also on H Street, is offering a 30 percent discount for federal workers and first responders.

Union Pub, near Union Station and the U.S. Capitol, will offer $4 rail cocktails, shots included, for everyone until the shutdown stops.

Baled by Yael is offering a free small coffee to any federal employee or contractor on furlough on weekdays for the duration of the shutdown. They are also offering a free bagel sandwich or small soup to any essential National Zoo workers if the zoo has to close.

Navy Federal Credit Union is offering a zero percent APR loan during the government shutdown for eligible members. Check their website for details and conditions. 

Pork Barrel BBQ in Alexandria, Virginia, is giving free pulled pork sandwiches to anyone who shows a their government ID every Monday through Firday during the shutdown. The BBQ joint said it will also provide free BBQ for any member of Congress who comes with a colleague from across the aisle to talk out solutions, because "good BBQ can fix anything."

Carmine's in D.C.'s Chinatown neighborhood is offering the Hard Times Cocktail for $12 and its happy hour menu all day in the bar as long as the shutdown continues. Carmine's says it will even throw in an extra meatball with any happy hour menu item. Patrons must show government ID.

Capitol Lounge in Southeast D.C. is offering federal workers $5 cocktails every day of the week during the shutdown. All you have to do is show your ID. 

Federal employees affected by the shutdown can get some extra food at Carmine's NYC. The restaurant says all federal workers in D.C. will get an all-day happy hour and an extra jumbo meatball. Just show your ID!
