Former Xavier Guard Dezmine Wells Transferring To Maryland

Former Xavier University guard Dezmine Wells has decided to transfer to the University of Maryland.

"The last couple of weeks have been the toughest time of my life for my family and I," Wells said in a statement that he tweeted. "I've learned that it is a major responsibility that comes with being a student athlete at all times. I'm thankful that God has blessed me with a second opportunity to continue my education."

The "second opportunity" that Wells is referring to is the fact that Xavier expelled him last month for a "serious violation of the Code of Student Conduct." In his freshman/final season with the Musketeers, Wells started 32 games, averaging 9.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

According to SB Nation, however, a judge found Wells' expulsion to be "the result of 'something seriously flawed' in the university's judicial process" and dismissed the allegations against him.

That being said, Maryland plans to seek a waiver that will allow Wells to play this season instead of sitting out as NCAA rules normally dictate. The Terps have one of the highest-rated recruiting classes in the country this season as expectations in College Park are high once again.

Maryland opens the season November 2 against Indiana (Pa.) University at Comcast Center.
