A former Metro supervisor was sentenced Monday to one year in jail for paying workers for hours they did not work.
Judge Larnzell Martin sentenced Alfred Atanga, 52, of Bowie, Md., to five years of supervised probation following his one-year jail sentence for his role in the scheme that cost Metro more than $24,500. The judge also ordered Atanga to pay approximately $9,100 in restitution to WMATA.
Atanga tampered with three Metro employees’ timesheets, allowing them to collect payment for overtime, according to prosecutors.
“Mr. Atanga was given the responsibility of managing WMATA resources and he abused his position in an attempt to gain favor with those who benefited from his actions,” Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks said in a statement. “We are pleased that he has been held accountable for his crimes.”
Atanga was convicted of aggregate theft of more than $10,000, and received a sentence near the top of the sentencing guidelines for his crime.
Metro fired the three employees who benefited from Atanga’s timesheet tampering.
