For Your Weekend: Funk Parade, Apple Store Opening, Spy Museum

Brave a little rain this weekend to dance in the streets with D.C.'s legendary Funk Parade — Or check out one of these other ways to make the most of your weekend.

But there's really only one thing you absolutely must do this weekend: Call a special woman in your life on Sunday, which is Mother's Day.

The Joint Base Andrews Air & Space Expo has canceled aerial demonstrations on Sunday due to expected bad weather. Head out on Saturday to catch stunning sky maneuvers, or go on Sunday to check out what the base offers on the ground.

The World's Largest Bounce House

This is what dreams are made of. The Big House America is coming to Maryland, bringing the so-called world's largest bounce house to our backyards.

It's definitely not just for kids: There are adults only hours for those aged 16 and up priced at $28 for a 3-hour run. Sessions where younger ones can bounce freely are available for kids under 3 ($16), kids under 7 ($24) and kids under 16 ($24). Find more details here.

The larger-than-life main exhibit allows you to interact with a swirling cherry blossom cloud, while other rooms feature live plants that respond to your touch and augmented reality stories. Adult admission starts at $15.

Old Town Cocktail Week

The first-ever Old Town Cocktail Week wraps up this weekend in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. Organizers invite attendees to "Drink Up Old Town" at any of more than 20 events taking place at local historic sites, restaurants and boutiques throughout the week. There will be special tastings, cocktail seminars and more. Admission varies for each event.

Joint Base Andrews 2019 Air & Space EXPO

This year’s Joint Base Andrews Air & Space Expo will feature the flights and air demos by the Air Force Thunderbirds and the Navy Blue Angels, as well as a variety of other military services including the KC-135, the F-16 Fighting Falcon and the UH-1N Iroquois. The base will be open to the public, but event attendees are asked to park at FedEx Field and take a shuttle to the base.

The air show is canceled on Sunday, so head down on Saturday to catch stunts in the sky. Ground-level fun will continue on Sunday.

The Wizarding World Film Festival

Calling all Harry Potter fans who don’t own the DVD set! The National Museum of American History will screen all of the films in the Harry Potter franchise this weekend, including the Fantastic Beasts films. On Friday night, they will host the Party of Erised at Warner Bros. Theater in the museum. Enjoy some snacks from Honeydukes, dark arts and crafts, and, of course, a good movie or two.

Festival season in the area isn’t just about the music scene. On Saturday, the Virginia Renaissance Festival will open the gates of the village of Staffordshire for its first weekend of jovial music, jousting, hound coursing and feasting on turkey legs the size of your head.

Last year, SaVanna Wanzer banded together We The People, a committee of people in the district dedicated to empowering members of the transgender and non-binary communities. They created a whole month’s worth of events to celebrate these individuals. This weekend’s events include an open mic night, a film screening and a trans art gallery showing.

Get a ticket soon to the annual “Mother of All Parties” this weekend. Brightest Young Things is hosting a takeover of the National Geographic Headquarters with the theme of the Queens of Egypt to celebrate their new exhibit. There will be live music performances, face painting and an open bar included in your ticket purchase.

Super Spectacular Comedy Show for Gun Violence Prevention

Everyone’s favorite defense mechanism, comedy, is taking center stage for the Super Spectacular Comedy Show for Gun Violence Prevention on Friday. If the event doesn’t sell out before opening, tickets will be available for $15 at the door.

2019 Contemporaries Bash

The Phillips Collection and the Embassy of Mexico are hosting the 2019 Contemporaries Bash: Maravillas de México (Wonders of Mexico) to celebrate female Mexican artists and their work. There will be mezcal, tacos and a colorful balloon lounge. The event is ticketed.

The new season of Truckeroo is finally upon us. On Friday, head down to Navy Yard to chow down on some local goods, including Korean BBQ Taco Box, Urban Poutine and DC Empanadas. Entry is free and all ages are welcome.

D.C. Funk Parade and Festival

Get your funk on this weekend in true D.C. style at the Funk Parade. The day’s events include a music festival, a parade, an additional night music festival and talks in spots all over the city, including DC9 and Songbyrd Music House.

Stop by five different stages with music at the festival, which runs 1-7 p.m.

The actual parade begins at 5 p.m., winding from 13th and U Streets NW to Vermont Avenue then east on T Street NW, ending just past 7th Street NW. Here's a map.

The night music festival heads indoors at 7 p.m. You need a $10 wristband to keep the funk going at more than 15 venues throughout the neighborhood.

Passport DC: European Union Open House

As part of International Cultural Awareness Month in Washington Passport DC, Cultural Tourism DC is hosting a month of global cultural events in D.C.’s many embassies. European countries will host an open house on Saturday for visitors to enjoy the music, food and art of the 28 nations. The event is free and open to all.

Embassies participating include Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, the Netherlands and — don't be surprised— the United Kingdom.

Carnegie Library Apple Store Opening

It’s been two years since Apple announced they would turn the historical Carnegie Library into a retail and coworking lab space. It opens this weekend to the public, initiating six weeks of local arts programming called StoryMaker Festival that will run until June 29. It’ll kick off with a performance from D.C. rapper GoldLink and end with a block party in partnership with local artists No Kings Collective.

Bike Tour: DC Climate Impacts

Citizens Climate Lobby DC will host an all-ages, 5-mile bike tour through the parts of the District that are most susceptible to climate impacts. Stops along the tour will feature areas where sea barriers have already been planned for potential floods.

Takoma Porch Festival

What better way is there to enjoy a weekend than by watching free live music performances on your neighbors' front porches? All you need is a blanket or chair to sit on.

Mt. Pleasant House and Garden Tour

Tour the gardens and homes of Mt. Pleasant this weekend to benefit the Bancroft Elementary PTO. There will be a reception after the tour. The event is ticketed.

For Sunday

Mercado D.C.: Latin American and Spanish Street Food Festival
10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The event’s Facebook page says attendees will experience a “culinary and cultural experience featuring Latin American and Spanish colorful flavors and music” as the street vendors whip up some authentic Latin foods for sale. The event is free for children 16 and under, but an adult $12 ticket includes one free beverage.

Official Spy Museum Grand Opening

International Spy Museum, 700 L'Enfant Plaza SW

The brand new International Spy Museum will officially open to the public on Sunday. The space will include interactive exhibitions, spy artifacts and first-person accounts from top intelligence officers and experts, says the event’s Facebook page.
