Reston Fire Injures 2 Residents, Kills 4 Pets

A man and woman in their 20s were airlifted to a D.C. hospital early Tuesday after a Reston home erupted in flames.

Firefighters were called to the home on the 12000 block of Purple Sage Court about 6:40 a.m. and rescued the married couple from the second floor of the townhouse, the Fairfax County Fire Department said.

The victims both went into cardiac arrest on the way to a hospital but were revived and airlifted to MedStar Washington Hospital Center in critical condition. Their two dogs and two cats died in the blaze, officials said.

As of Tuesday evening, the woman was conscious and speaking to investigators. Her husband was in stable condition.

The fire began at the front of the house, near the door, officials said Tuesday evening. The cause of the blaze remained under investigation.

Fairfax County Fire Department Chief Richard Bowers offered two fire safety tips: "Have a working smoke alarm on every floor, and when you go to bed at night, shut the bedroom door."
