Fire Destroys Mt. Rainier Home; Firefighters Work to Save 2nd Home

A home in Mount Rainier, Maryland home was destroyed by an early morning fire that ripped through the structure before spreading to a car and neighboring homes.

Fire crews were called to the home in the 4000 block of 37th Street at 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

Video recorded by a neighbor shows the home completely engulfed in flames. By the time the fire was extinguished, only the home's chimney was left standing. A car in the driveway was also left charred.

"[I]t was like the flames were coming off the porch and wrapped around the front of the house. All you could see was the chimney up top," said neighbor Butch Duvall said.

The man who lives in the home has been in the hospital and was not home at the time of the fire, neighbors said.

A woman who lives next door reportedly heard an explosion before her own home caught fire. Firefighters worked through the morning to keep her home from burning down. Her home, however, was heavily damaged.

The woman's son, Timothy Tillery, is just thankful his mom is okay.

"My mom just retired 30 days ago. I'm just worried about my mom. She lives alone. This is my whole world right here," Tillery said.

Fire officials say another nearby home also suffered damage.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Damages are estimated to be $450,000 for all three homes and their contents.
