Firefighter, 23, Dies in Charles County Crash

A 23-year-old firefighter was killed late Sunday in a crash in Charles County, Maryland.

Kyle Joseph Compton was a member of the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad Inc. for five years, the department said Monday.

According to an initial investigation, Compton, a Brandywine resident, was driving north on Turkey Hill Road in White Plains his car left the opposite of the road and struck several trees, the Charles County Sheriff's Office said.

Officers responded to the scene shortly after 11:30 p.m. and found Compton trapped in his vehicle. He was extricated but was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Authorities are investigating the crash.

Compton was a certified firefighter and emergency medical technician who was recognized with several awards, the department said in a release.

"His sense of humor and presence will be missed by everyone around the station," the release said. "... Please keep Kyle's family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. Rest In Peace, Kyle."
