Fire Engine at Center of Budget Battle in Alexandria

Fire safety is at the center of a budget battle in Alexandria, Va.

The city manager is proposing moving a fire engine from the Powhatan Park area to a new station soon to open on Eisenhower Avenue.

That would save the cost of adding additional firefighters for the new station as originally planned.

While some equipment would stay in the Powhatan Park neighborhood, the only truck that carries water would be farther away.

Critics say the greater response time could be costly.
