Fire in Lanham Displaces Residents of 14 Apartments

"I thank God no life was lost. Everything that is lost there is replaceable," a resident said

Eleven days before Christmas, a fire has displaced the residents of more than a dozen homes in Lanham, Maryland.

A fire started in the wall of an apartment on the 5600 block of Whitfield Chapel Road Thursday morning and spread to other units. The residents of a total of 14 units were displaced.

Resident Kenneth Johnson helped his neighbor, who uses a wheelchair, get out.

"I was like, 'Let me go help him out, try to get him out the building, because they were trying to evacuate the building,'" he said.

He was modest about his role in rescuing his neighbor.

"Nothing special. Just something anybody would do," he said.

No one was seriously injured. Resident Olayinka Amodu said she was thankful for that.

"I thank God no life was lost. Everything that is lost there is replaceable," she said.
