Suspect in Fatal Chantilly Parking Lot Shooting Now Free on Bond

The man accused of fatally shooting one person and wounding two others in a shopping center parking lot was released from Fairfax County Adult Detention Center on bond Thursday.

Steven A. Green, 51, was arrested in Chantilly, Virginia, last week and charged with the murder of 30-year-old Miguel Leiva Hernandez, who died after Green allegedly fired off a gun amid a parking lot scuffle that turned violent.

According to court documents filed by prosecutors, the incident started with Green getting into an argument with Leiva Hernandez's wife. Prosecutors said that at some point Green, a street sweeper, struck the woman with a leaf blower. Leiva Herndandez saw that his wounded wife was bleeding, and he approached Green. The confrontation escalated quickly, and according to the documents, Green pulled a firearm and said, "Stop or I'll shoot."

The documents said that at that point, Leiva Hernandez retreated, but the situation escalated to a physical altercation during which Green allegedly shot his gun and struck Leiva Hernandez.

Fairfax County police responded to the scene after receiving a call around 1:30 a.m. reporting a shooting on the 14500 block of Lee Jackson Memorial Highway, Fairfax County police spokesperson Emilie Voss said.

Responding officers found Leiva Hernandez suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead, Voss said.

Green allegedly drove away to find help but returned to the parking lot and admitted to police he was the shooter, Voss said. Green cooperated with detectives and a gun was found at the scene, police said.

A woman and a man were also hurt, but not by gunfire. Their injuries were not life threatening, police said.

Several people at the scene were detained and cooperated with police interviews, Voss said.

Police said they were not naming the other people involved in the incident amid their ongoing investigation.

Attorney information for Green was not yet known at time of publication. Police have not said anything about the man's release.
