3 Killed in 4-Vehicle Crash in Maryland

Three people were killed in a four-vehicle crash in Washington County, Maryland, Tuesday afternoon.

The crash took place about 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 40 and Mt. Lena Road near Boonsboro, Maryland State Police said.

A dump struck hit a Toyota Prius from behind that was stopped on westbound Route 40 waiting to make a left turn on to Mt. Lena Road, police said. The Prius and the dump truck crossed the opposite lane, striking two Harley Davidson Motorcycles.

Three people were pronounced dead at the scene, including the drivers of the motorcycles, police said.

One person was flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore. Another was taken to Meritus Health Hospital in Hagerstown.

Route 40 is closed in both directions and likely will remain closed through rush hour.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
