Fairfax Police Officer Accused of Stealing Gas From County

A former Fairfax County police officer has been accused of stealing thousands of gallons of gasoline from the county.

Lon Wolber was indicted Monday on charges of embezzlement and misuse of public funds after police say he stole more than 2,500 gallons of gas from the county.

Chief of Police Edwin Roessler says Wolber, who had been with the force for 28 years, submitted his retirement the day after he was confronted with evidence of the theft.

Authorities began investigating the matter in October, when a county employee noticed suspicious activity at a pumping station.

County employees use an access code to obtain fuel at a county pump. Roessler says Wolber used retired employees' codes and the codes of active employees who were working in other areas.
