8 Firefighters Injured While Battling House Fire

Eight Huntingtown volunteer firefighters are recovering after suffering injuries  fighting a fire early Sunday morning.

The blaze destroyed a mansion valued at $2 million.

It happened in the 3300 block of Soper Road around midnight.  All five people inside got out OK, but two firefighters suffered severe burns and were airlifted to a local hospital.

Crews say the three-alarm fire started in the chimney and spread quickly to the attic.  The roof was pulled down when the chimney collapsed.

Assistant Chief Michael Montgomery told News4 that one of the firefighters is expected to leave the hospital sometime on Sunday, while the other will stay for a few days to be evaulated.
