East Coast Rapist Suspect Will Be Extradited to Virginia

Currently held in Connecticut

A Connecticut prosecutor says the state has decided to extradite to Virginia a man suspected in rape cases along the East Coast.

New Haven State's Attorney Michael Dearington said Tuesday that the state has decided to extradite Aaron Thomas of New Haven. He would not discuss why the state agreed to the extradition.

Public defender Joseph Lopez, who represents Thomas, said a hearing is scheduled in New Haven Superior Court Monday to consider his motion for a speedy trial and a challenge to the extradition attempt.

The 40-year-old Thomas pleaded not guilty in March to a charge of raping a woman in New Haven in 2007. Authorities say DNA confirmed he is responsible for rapes and other attacks on 17 women from Virginia to Connecticut.

The extradition decision was first reported by the New Haven Register.
