E-ZPass Cameras Can’t Read Some Virginia License Plates

Thousands of drivers in Virginia could have a free pass to use the state's toll roads without knowing it.

The problem is with specialty license plates that have a lot of shapes and colors. A report from Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles found the cameras that monitor the toll roads can't read them. So some drivers without an E-ZPass can breeze by without ever having to pay.

The lost toll payments are costing the state an estimated $100,000 per year, sparking concerns that other drivers will have to pay more to make up for the shortfall.

The state is reportedly working on a fix.

Lawmakers have no plans to recall the license plates that are causing the issues.
