The man who hit a mother and a baby with his SUV last year, killing the baby, was found guilty Tuesday on two lesser charges.
John Miller IV pleaded "no contest" to reckless driving and guilty to failure to yield in the crash that killed 5-month-old Tristan Schulz in Lansdowne, Virginia, on Aug. 31, 2016.
"Just to hear Miller say the word 'guilty' was in some ways a small satisfaction, but it's just not what we hoped," said Candy Baracat-Donovan, a Lansdowne mother and support of the Schulz family.
"An apology would've been nice," said Anna Thorner, another Lansdowne mom and Schulz family supporter.
Dozens of parents who live in Lansdowne feel Miller is getting of easy.
"The Schulz's deserve to have Tristan," family supporter Elizabeth Freeman said. "Tristan should be here, and because he's not, they deserve justice."
The judge found him guilty on both counts. Last month, a judge dropped an involuntary manslaughter charge. Prosecutors said they didn't have the evidence to try him on that charge.
Tristan Schulz died after Miller's SUV plowed into the infant's mother, Mindy Schulz, and the baby's stroller. Miller was turning onto Riverside Parkway, and the mother and child were in the crosswalk.
A witness to the devastating crash said Miller was using his cellphone. But other witnesses said he was driving normally, and cellphone records do not definitively prove that Miller was using his phone at the moment he crashed into the mother and infant, court records show.
Prosecutors said they couldn't prove involuntary manslaughter beyond a reasonable doubt.
Miller will likely be sentenced later this year and faces up to a year in jail.
