Driver Tried to Run After Striking, Killing Woman in Falls Church: Police

A pickup truck driver struck a juvenile and a 60-year-old woman, killing her, then took off running in Falls Church, Virginia, police say.

About 3 p.m., the suspect went off Shreve Road at Hickory Street while the woman and a juvenile were walking in a crosswalk, Fairfax County police said. The truck struck the woman, the child and then a tree, Fairfax County police said.

Betty Ana Bernstein-Zabza, of Falls Church, was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead, police say. The child was treated for minor injuries.

Witnesses said the man then ran into a nearby Veterans of Foreign Wars building and spoke to some people in the parking lot.

One of them was an off-duty officer who got suspicious and called police.

Police say David Allen Francis, 46, of South Riding, was arrested and charged with one felony hit and run. Police say they anticipate more charges.

Francis is being held without bond. Police say he is believed to have been involved in more criminal activity on Saturday.
