Ten DMV High Schools Ranked in National Top 500

Newsweek has ranked the top 500 schools in the country on how well they prepare students for college -- and several schools from Maryland and Virginia made the list.

Rank: 1 --  Thomas Jefferson High, Alexandria, Virginia
Thomas Jefferson claimed the number-one spot on this year's list and also met the "equity measure," which acknowledges a school's success in helping low-income students score at or above average on state assessments. The school scored 100 in college readiness, with a 100 percent graduation rate, and 99.8 percent of grads are college bound.

Rank: 110 -- Poolesville High, Maryland
Just past the 100 mark sits Poolesville High, a magnet school scoring an 84 in college readiness with a 100 percent graduation rate. At Poolesville, 85.4 percent of graduates are college bound. 

Rank: 187 -- Walt Whitman High, Bethesda, Maryland 
Walt Whitman scored 81.8 in college readiness, and also has a 100 percent graduation rate. At the school, 75.3 percent of graduates are college bound. This school also has an average SAT score of 1903 -- the statewide 2014 average was 1468.

Rank: 254 -- Thomas S. Wootton High, Rockville, Maryland
With a college readiness score of 80.1, this high school has a 98.3 percent graduation rate and 82.2 percent of graduates are college bound. It also has a 97.9 percent retention rate.

Rank: 268 -- Winston Churchill High, Potomac, Maryland 
A 79.8 college readiness score and a 99.3 percent graduation rate land Winston Churchill at 268. At this school, 81.8 percent of graduates are college bound.

Rank: 344 -- Urbana High, Ijamsville, Maryland 
This high school scored 78.3 in college readiness and has a 99.4 percent graduation rate. At this school, 99.4 percent of graduates are college-bound. This school has also been acknowledged for helping low-income students score at or above average on state assessments.

Walter Johnson High scored 77.5 in college readiness, and has a 100 percent graduation rate. At this school, 76.4 percent of graduates are college bound. The retention rate is 97.5 percent. 

Rank: 432 Hidden Valley High, Roanoke Virginia
This school scored 77.1 in college readiness, with a 97.9 percent graduation rate. At this school, 95.4 percent of graduates are college bound.

Rank: 449 Northern High, Owings, Maryland 
This school scored 76.9 in college readiness with a 99.5 percent graduation rate. At this school, 88.4 percent of those graduates are college bound. This school has also been acknowledged for helping low-income students score at or above average on state assessments. 

Rank: 471 Albermarle High, Charlottesville, Virginia
Albermarle High scored 76.5 in college readiness with a 95.2 percent graduation rate, and 88 percent of those graduates are college bound.
