DMV Celebrates Labor Day With Parades, Festivals, Car Show

The D.C. area marks Labor Day with parades and festivals, but before the marching begins, a car show.

Clifton Lions Club Labor Day Car Show

The annual Clifton Lions Club Labor Day Car Show is open until 3 p.m. Monday at 4020 University Drive in the City of Fairfax. The free show includes music and food in addition to the cars, trucks and motorcycles.

The show features antique cars from the 1920s and ’30s, hot rods from the 1940s and ’50s, custom cars, classic cars, muscle cars and foreign car. Twenty-four trophies will be awarded.

In addition to hot dogs, burgers and barbecue served by the Clifton Lions Club (which is holding the car show in Fairfax for the first time), Hard Times Café is hosting a beer garden, and Sophie’s Pies is serving pies from a 1920s Model A Ford truck.

The Lions Club is accepting donations to benefit the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program and Inova Hospital System’s Life with Cancer.

University Drive in the area is closed to traffic until 4 p.m.

49th Annual Kensington Labor Day Parade and Festival

The 49th Annual Kensington Labor Day Parade and Festival began at 10 a.m.

Local school marching bands; equestrian show groups; dance groups; floats and ambassadors from local churches, schools, non-profits and businesses; and local, state and federally elected officials traveled down Connecticut Avenue from St. Paul Park toward Town Hall.

Spectators explored food vendors, games and children’s activities along Armory and Howard avenues.

61st Annual Greenbelt Labor Day Festival Parade

Greenbelt's Labor Day Festival Parade took place from 10 a.m. to noon.

Several local and state elected officials were scheduled to ride in the parade, including Rep. Steny Hoyer and Sen. Ben Cardin.

The festival, which ends at 6 p.m., includes amusement rides, carnival games, food and refreshments, sports and recreation for all ages, art exhibits and activities, art and photo shows, talent competitions, and the Miss Greenbelt Pageant.

Herndon Labor Day Festival

Herndon holds its annual street festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Downtown Herndon and Herndon Municipal Center Lawn.

The festival features a full slate of live music. Virginia wineries, local craft brews, a craft show, sponsorship gallery and a variety of food vendors will be at the festival.

Admission is $5 with children 12 and under free.

Admission with unlimited wine tasting and two craft brew tastings is $20. Tastings end at 4 p.m.

No pets allowed.

78th Annual Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade

Gaithersburg and the Gaithersburg-Washington Grove Fire Department present its 78th Annual Labor Day Parade at 1 p.m.

School marching bands, dance groups, costumed characters, antique cars and fire engines, politicians, equestrian units, clowns, and more will travel the 1-mile parade route from East Diamond to Odendhal Avenue.

Jen Richer of The Tommy Show on 94.7 Fresh FM serves as mistress of ceremonies.

Street closures for the parade alter traffic beginning at 10 a.m. Shuttle bus service from the Lakeforest Shopping Center transit station to Gaithersburg Elementary School begins at noon.
