Democrat Kathleen Murphy was elected Tuesday to represent Virginia's 34th district.

Murphy defeated Republican Craig Parisot in a special election to replace Del. Barbara Comstock (R), who was elected to U.S. Congress last November.

This is the second time Murphy, the president of a McLean-based consulting firm, has run for the seat. She was edged out by Comstock in 2013, according to

Parisot, a businessman and Air Force veteran, won the Republican nomination back in November.

The 34th House district includes McLean area of Fairfax County and stretches west through Great Falls into parts of Loudoun County.
