A Democratic state senator from Richmond is asking a court to compel the state attorney general's office to release communications involving the principal figure in a political gift-giving scandal.
Sen. Donald McEachin said Tuesday he has filed the suit in Richmond Circuit Court. His thwarted open records request sought communications involving Jonnie Williams, the CEO of Star Scientific and a political benefactor to Gov. Bob McDonnell and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, the Republican candidate for governor.
McEachin's lawsuit claims the attorney general's office has not responded to his requests for information he said was willingly disclosed to Cuccinelli's political campaign. He said the request is all about transparency.
A spokesman for the attorney general's office said McEachin has declined to work with the office to narrow his search.
