Delaware Lifts I-95 Toll at Newark

In attempt to alleviate traffic on Interstate 95, the Delaware Department of Transportation has lifted the toll for northbound traffic at the Newark Toll Plaza.

The suspension of the toll began at 3 p.m. Wednesday and continues until 11 p.m.

It’s the first time this toll has been lifted in 15 years and it comes in response to miles of backups due to construction and one of the busiest travel days of the year.

Officials have warned travelers to try to avoid the area because of backups of up to 20 miles anticipated. AAA reported backups up to 30 miles in some places Wednesday.

Earlier Wednesday, the southbound lanes were closed for two hours near Wilmington after a truck overturned and spilled its load.

Delaware DOT won’t be able to determine how much revenue is being lost today until next week. Last year, about 113,000 passed through both the southbound and northbound sides of the toll plaza on the day before Thanksgiving.
