One Killed in Head-On Crash on I-95 in Maryland

One person died in a head-on crash early Wednesday on Interstate 95 in Maryland.

The accident occured near the Intercounty Connector in Beltsville, Md., when a car traveling north on I-95 crossed into the southbound lanes and crashed into a tractor-trailer.

The car was badly crushed and the driver was killed.

Maryland State Police were called to the scene just after 3:30 a.m.

"I know that it hit him in the rear tandem, and the 18-wheeler is very long. I don't know if he saw it coming," said Maryland State Police Lt. Sean Morris.

A second car was found in the grassy median, but it is not known at this point how or if that vehicle was involved. Police say the driver of the tractor-trailer remained at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

Morris said that at this point investigators have believe that the deceased was at fault in the crash. That driver has not been identified publicly.

Traffic was backed up about five miles while the southbound lanes were closed. They reopened by mid-day Wednesday.
