Republican Mark Obenshain conceded the race for Virginia’s next attorney general to Democrat Mark Herring Wednesday afternoon.
At a press conference in Richmond, Obenshain said he called his opponent to congratulate him on his victory.
Obenshain made the announcement following the release of the recount results in Fairfax County, which left Obenshain with 117,722 votes to Herring's 185,538. Fairfax County is Virginia's largest jurisdiction.
The county's results represent an increase of 575 votes for Herring and an increase of 297 votes for Obenshain.
The results of the Fairfax County recount are being sent to the Recount Court in Richmond, where they will be certified.
Obenshain sought the recount after he trailed Herring by just 165 votes of more than 2.2 million cast Nov. 5.
