WASHINGTON — University of Maryland officials report that one student has been diagnosed with mumps and two other students are suspected to be infected at the College Park campus.
The cases are believed to be linked, according to a statement from Dr. David McBride, the director of the university’s health center.
All U.Md. students are required to be immunized against mumps, which is contagious and is spread through contact with saliva droplets. However, the vaccine is not 100 percent effective, McBride said.
Mumps typically causes fever, headache and body aches. A “classic” symptom of mumps involves swelling of the salivary glands at the angle of the jaw, which usually resolves within one to two weeks.
Mumps is treated with rest, fluids and pain relievers.
