D.C. Public Schools Website Exposes Special Education Students' Personal Information

D.C. Public Schools officials are apologizing for unintentionally exposing the personal information of 10,000 special education students.

Buzzfeed found the information unprotected on a school website. It had apparently been open to the public since the site launched in 2010.

The site stores training material for special education cases and included some student information and the login information to a database of the district’s special education students.

"There is currently no evidence that data was compromised," read a statement from DCPS.

The website was locked and the database login changed Monday after Buzzfeed notified the school district.

"We understand how important it is to safeguard student information and will conduct a top to bottom review of our security practices to ensure this does not happen again," the DCPS statement read.
