D.C. Officer From Md. Honored for Bravery at Navy Yard

A District of Columbia police officer from Ellicott City got a congressional medal for helping to kill the Washington Navy Yard shooter in 2013.

Metropolitan Police Department Officer Dorian DeSantis was awarded the Congressional Badge of Bravery Wednesday.

The award is given to law enforcement officers for exceptional acts of bravery.

DeSantis helped kill Aaron Alexis, who killed 12 people and wounded four others at the military installation on Sept. 16, 2013. He was paired with Park Police Officer Carl Hiott.

Cummings says DeSantis took a bullet in his vest and helped secure the safety of others before firing.

Alexis was a civilian contractor and former Navy reservist with mental health problems.

The building where the shooting occurred reopened in February.
