DC Mayor to Discuss Statehood Effort on National TV

District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser is making some national media appearances to discuss her push to make the District a state.

Bowser's administration has been working to craft a new constitution for the so-called "state of New Columbia.'' The D.C. Council voted Tuesday to put a statehood referendum on the ballot in November.

If that's approved, the District would then submit its new constitution to Congress, which could then admit the city as the 51st state. But Congress is not likely to take up the matter. The District is overwhelmingly Democratic, and most Republicans oppose statehood for both constitutional and political reasons.

Bowser will be in New York on Thursday for appearances on MSNBC's "Morning Joe'' and CNN's "Legal View with Ashleigh Banfield.''
