D.C., Maryland, Virginia Schools Among Best In Nation: Survey

Several schools in Washington, D.C., Montgomery County, Md., and northern Virginia made Newsweek’s list of America’s best high schools for 2011.

A panel of experts looked at more than 1,000 top schools across the nation to determine the best of the best -- the schools that produce kids who are ready for college and life.

Each school’s score was based on six weighted measures, including graduation rate, AP courses offered and SAT/ACT scores.

Here’s how schools across the D.C. area ranked in the top 500:

D.C.:

  • Benjamin Banneker, 239
  • School Without Walls, 269

Montgomery County, Md.:

  • Poolesville, 64
  • Winston Churchill, 91
  • Thomas Wootton, 102
  • Walt Whitman, 117
  • Bethesda-Chevy Chase, 145
  • Walter Johnson, 215
  • Richard Montgomery, 242
  • Sherwood, 468

Northern Virginia:

  • Stone Bridge, 127
  • Centreville, 177
  • Briar Woods, 198
  • Freedom, 183

"I want to congratulate the students, parents, teachers, and administrators at Benjamin Banneker Academic and School Without Walls Senior High Schools for being named two of  America’s Best by Newsweek magazine," acting D.C. Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson said in a press release.
