New evidence suggests what possibly went gone wrong in the smoke incident that killed a passenger near the L'Enfant Plaza Metro Station in January, and it comes amid new questions about evacuation plans at some of Metro's older stations.
Water leaking into electrical equipment led to the heavy smoke, according to a report from D.C.'s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency obtained by the News4 I-Team’s Scott MacFarlane through a Freedom of Information Act request.
The National Transportation Safety Board has not talked about a probable cause for the incident.
Tuesday, the Montgomery County Council talked about water on tracks in the entire Metro system.
"I do worry about the water because if you don't address the underlying problem you’re going to keep replacing equipment,” Council member Marc Elrich said.
Also Tuesday, questions about how long it would take to evacuate a station like Bethesda if something happened. Metro acknowledged the station was built before new fire codes were put in place and therefore would not meet current standards for evacuation.
