Due to overcrowding at local shelters, the D.C. government has more than 60 homeless individuals to a Prince George's County hotel.
The District's shelters, temporary shelters and hotels that accept homeless are all full.
"This is not a facility that's intended to house families for months at a time," D.C. Council member and mayoral candidate Tommy Wells said.
Wells held a news conference at the site of the hotel, the Howard Johnson Inn in Cheverly, Tuesday.
"We have a meeting room that we've dedicated just to DHS so they have their own private facility," the hotel's general manager said, when asked if the homeless were being fed.
A spokesperson with D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray released the following statement to News4 regarding the situation.
"It's a shameless and political stunt. Under District law, we are legally required to house people who seek housing ... we're the only jurisdiction with that rule. D.C. spends more on homeless services that it ever has in the past and this administration continues to increase spending on homelessness."
