D.C. Holds Emergency Drills Saturday

Local agencies rehearsing a coordinated response to a simulated explosion near Potomac Avenue SE

Local agencies are conducting emergency drills in the district Saturday, and are cautioning residents not to be alarmed at a large presence of first-responders in the area.

The agencies will rehearse coordinated responses to a simulated explosion at 1724 S. Capitol St. SE, near Potomac Avenue.

Participating agencies include the Office of the Mayor, Metropolitan Police, D.C. Fire and EMS, the Department of Health, and the Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency.

The exercises should be finished by 2 p.m. Saturday.

No streets are expected to be closed.

"The emphasis in this exercise involves the use and coordination of [the Incident Command System] and its response procedures across agencies with varying missions but with a single focus of keeping the public safe," said a release.
