Girl Scouts Help Shoppers Go Green, Save Green

Scouts to distribute reusable shopping bags

Take that, bag tax!

Local Girl Scouts will be distributing free, reusable grocery bags at seven Giant supermarkets in the District on New Year’s Day -- the same day D.C. will begin charging a tax on paper and plastic bags to support the new Anacostia River Protection Fund.

City businesses that sell food or alcohol are required to charge five cents for every paper or plastic bag used by a customer.

The Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital (GSCNC) is teaming up with Boeing for the two-hour bag-a-thon. Boeing contributed 2,000 reusable grocery bags for Girl Scouts to give away.

“We realize that our planet faces many challenges and that reusable bags will help eliminate thousands of plastic and paper shopping bags that are choking our planet,” said Kathryn Benison, GSCNC Area Manager for the District of Columbia.

The free bags will be distributed from 4-6 p.m. on January 1, 2010, at the following Giant Supermarket locations in the District:
  • Giant, 1414 Eight Street, NW, O Street Market
  • Giant, 1345 Park Road, NW, Tivoli Square
  • Giant, 3336 Wisconsin Avenue, Newark and Macomb
  • Giant, 1050 Brentwood Road, Brentwood
  • Giant, 4303 Connecticut Avenue, Van Ness
