Food Bank Getting Prison Apples

The incarcerated are doing their part to help the hungry.

The Maryland Division of Correction says it's selling apples grown at a prison complex near Hagerstown to the Maryland Food Bank.

The agency planned to deliver some of the fruit Monday at the orchard near the Roxbury Correctional Institution.

A spokesman says inmates are harvesting 2,000 bushels of red delicious and gala apples from about 1,200 trees.

The agency says some of the fruit will be served to inmates at the three-prison complex near Hagerstown. And some will be sold to the food bank for 20 cents a pound, or about one-tenth the retail market value.
