DC Designates ‘Exchange Zones' for Residents Who Buy, Sell Online

Police say residents should be careful when they meet strangers to buy or sell items they find online

D.C. police have set up three safe areas in the District for residents and visitors to buy or exchange items they find online.

The "Exchange Zones" are meant to deter robberies and are well-lit areas near police stations.

Police said several people have been targeted in D.C. after using mobile marketplace apps to buy or sell items. Suspects use the online platforms to lure people to meet them and rob them when they arrive, police said.

The three Exchange Zones include:

  • Special Operations Division’s Harbor Patrol: 550 Water Street, SW
  • Third District: 1620 V Street, NW
  • Sixth District: 5002 Hayes Street, NE
Police said residents should never meet anyone alone or list a home address, phone number or other identifiable information and should never meet anyone at night.
