DC Budget Calls for Later Bar Hours on Holidays

Nothing says partytime like ... Washington's birthday?

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser's proposed budget for 2019 calls for bars to be able to stay open late on additional holiday weekends.

Instead of having to stop serving alcohol at the usual 3 a.m. on weekends, the proposal calls for a 4 a.m. stopping time on the Saturday and Sunday before Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day.

Also, alcohol could be served until 4 a.m. on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday after Thanksgiving.

The extended hours are expected to generate an additional $313,000, the city says. Washington Business Journal was first to report on the proposal.

Bars are already allowed to serve alcohol late for New Year's Day weekend, Independence Day and Christmas, among other holidays.
