D.C. Auditor Reviewing Police Use-of-Force Policies

The District of Columbia Auditor's office is taking a fresh look at use of force by police in the nation's capital.

The office has hired a consultant to make sure that the Metropolitan Police Department is still complying with reforms that were mandated under an agreement with the Justice Department.

Former D.C. police chief Charles Ramsey sought a Justice Department review in 2001 amid reports that police in the District fatally shot more people per capita than in any other major U.S. city. The resulting consent decree lasted until 2008, and the department was credited with revamping its use-of-force policies.

On Thursday, the auditor's office announced that in March, it asked the independent monitor who oversaw the reforms to review them to make sure the department is still in compliance.
