D.C. Approves Plan to Bury Power Lines

The D.C. Council approved an ambitious billion-dollar plan to bury some power lines in the city.

The idea came after that derecho storm in 2012 left thousands of homes and businesses without power for several days.

A task force of residents, government officials and power company executives recommended the plan that would target about 60 different areas.

No specific sites were announced, but the focus would be on neighborhoods with heavy tree canopies.

The project is expected to take a decade and would initially add $1.50 per month for Pepco customers to help pay for the work.
