Girl, 3, Wanders Away From Day Care, Goes to Papa John's

Director charged with child neglect

A 3-year-old girl wandered away from a Virginia day care unsupervised and into a nearby Papa John's.

Prince William County Police said they have video of the girl walking out the front door of Kiddie Academy of Gainesville and over to a nearby business about 8:30 p.m. Nov. 19. Unable to find her family, someone inside the pizza place called 911.

"I don't know how the child got out," said Chris Scholl, a parent of a child at the day care. "Those doors are pretty heavy."

The day care's director, 23-year-old Nayoung Park, was in charge of watching the girl and didn't notice when she left the building, police said.

Park turned herself in to police Wednesday. She was charged with felony child neglect and released on a $1,000 unsecured bond.

Kiddie Academy of Gainesville said it reported the incident to the state and emailed every parent of children at the day care.

"When we heard about it, we were pretty shocked," Scholl said.

"While the incident was unprecedented at the Kiddie Academy of Gainesville, we take the safety and care of all our students seriously and we were relieved that the child was safely returned to the parents without harm," the day care said in a written statement.

Park is on indefinite administrative leave.
