Culpeper Mayor Calvin "Chip" Coleman is facing a misdemeanor sexual battery charge.
Media outlets report that Virginia State Police charged Coleman on Tuesday. Details haven't been released.
Coleman's attorney, Rex Edwards, says his client denies the allegations and will plead not guilty.
A June 4 hearing is scheduled in Culpeper General District Court.
The Daily Progress reports that Coleman, 64, is also facing a pending defamation lawsuit from former Town Manager Kim Alexander, who claims that alleged Coleman spread rumors around town that she was sleeping with councilmen.
Coleman was elected as mayor in 2010. He lost a re-election bid last week.
