When authorities investigated a small fire on Tuesday night at a Dupont Circle condo, they found more than flames.
The incident report says officers who responded to the building at 1630 R Street NW found evidence of a methamphetamine lab.
Officials confirmed to News4 the matter remains under investigation. It's the second recent finding of meth production in a high-rent Northwest neighborhood.
Last November, D.C. police say they discovered a quantity of crystal methamphetamine, weighing scales, and a large amount of cash at a condo in the 900 block of S Street in the Shaw area, near the popular U Street corridor. That investigation is also ongoing.
Nick McCoy, a board member of The Center, a Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender Community Center on U ST NW, says the presence of crystal meth in one of the District's most affluent areas is not surprising. The Center has been at the forefront of helping the gay community deal with what one activist called an "epidemic" of crystal meth abuse.
No arrests were made in Tuesday's incident, but a spokesperson for D.C. Police says the department is in consolation with the US Attorney's office on the matter.
