Consumer Reports Reveals Picks for Best New Cars

Consumer Reports has released its top 10 picks for new cars, and three American manufacturers landed spots on the list.

Topping the list is the 2015 Tesla Model S, and the publication says it's the best car it has ever tested. The electric car is big on power; it can go from 0 mph to 60 mph in five seconds. It also gets 84 miles to the gallon.

But there's a catch. The Tesla Model S will cost you $90,000.

If that's out of your price range, Consumer Reports has nine other cars you can pick from.

The 2015 Subaru Legacy won the top spot for mid-size vehicles.

"[T]hey all have all-wheel drive, and that's kind of held them back a little bit because of fuel efficiency and acceleration. Well, they seem to get it all together this time with the new Legacy," said Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports' director of auto testing.

When it comes to mini-vans, Fisher says the Honda Odyssey is sporty and has plenty of room.

"It's just amazing. Again, it drives like a smaller car. It's got tons of functionality, it's reliable, really a great overall vehicle," Fisher explained.

There's also a huge change on the list -- more American models made the cut this year than any time since the turn of the century. In addition to the Tesla Model S, the Chevrolet Impala won the "Large Car" category and the Buick Regal was the best sports sedan.

The following cars round out the list:

  • Green Car – Toyota Prius
  • Small SUV – Subaru Forester
  • Compact Car – Subaru Impreza
  • Luxury Car – Audi A6
  • Midsized SUV – Toyota Highlander
