Cold Case Develops as Suspect is Charged with Killing Young Mother at Party

Cold case unit detectives charged a man who they say killed a young mother at a 2009 graduation party, Prince George’s County police announced Wednesday.

27-year-old Larry Recio, originally from Lanham, Maryland, is already in a West Virginia correctional facility because of unrelated charges. Police say they will charge him with first degree murder and several counts of attempted first degree murder.

Police responded to a graduation celebration on the 9000 block of Continental Place at 11:45 p.m. on June 2, 2009 after reports of a shooting. Officers found four people outside suffering from gunshot wounds. One of those people, 19-year-old Shai Caldwell of Bowie, died from her injury hours after police arrived.

Caldwell had a young child, News4 reported at the time.

The three other victims survived their injuries.

Police said that Caldwell was not Recio’s intended victim. Recio was involved in an ongoing dispute with other males, police said.

Police say they used witness testimony and other evidence to find their suspect in this cold case.

Anyone with information on this suspect is asked to please call Prince George’s County police at (301) 772-4925.
