Closing Arguments in Case of Slain D.C. Socialite

Closing arguments are expected in District of Columbia in the trial of a German man charged with killing his elderly wife, a journalist and socialite.

Jurors are expected Wednesday to begin deliberating the fate of 49-year-old Albrecht Muth after hearing about a week's worth of testimony in the case.

Muth is charged in the August 2011 beating and strangulation of 91-year-old Viola Drath. His lawyers have said he's innocent and there's no evidence connecting him to the crime.

He did not attend the trial in D.C. Superior Court, participating instead via videoconference, after doctors said his bouts of starvation have made him too weak to appear. A judge concluded that Muth was manipulating the criminal justice system and said the trial could proceed anyway.
