4-Year-Old Girl Accidentally Shot, Wounded by Another Child: DC Police

NBC Universal, Inc.

A 4-year-old girl is seriously injured after she was shot by another child in what appears to be an accidental shooting on Memorial Day, D.C. police say.

The child was found suffering from a gunshot wound Monday night in an apartment in the 3000 block of 30th Street SE.

She was rushed to a hospital, transferred to another hospital and is “fighting for her life,” Chief of Police Peter Newsham said in an update Tuesday morning.

It appears that another child was playing with a gun and accidentally fired the shot, Newsham said. Officers said Monday night that that the child is between age 3 and 7.

An investigation is underway.

“We’re still trying to decipher and determine who the owner of the gun was, and whether it’s registered or unregistered. Right now, our intense focus is on the condition of the child,” Cmdr. Andre Wright said Monday.

No charges have been filed.

Newsham offered his “thoughts and condolences” to the family of the young gunshot victim.
