Toddler Dies After Being Found in Backyard Pool at DC Home Daycare

A child found in a small backyard pool at a home day care in D.C. has died.

The victim, a little boy, would have turned 2 years old at the end of the month.

The D.C. fire department received a report of an unconscious child Tuesday about 11:30 a.m.

Medics rushed the child to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived.

The child was at a licensed child development home in Northeast D.C., a representative of the the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) said.

The day care provider had been caring for young children for years, neighbors said. She treats the children like they're her own.

The child's death is under investigation by D.C. police and the Child and Family Services Agency. At this point, police do not believe the day care provider was negligent.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the child," OSSE's statement said in part.

D.C. officials said this is the first drowning of the season in D.C.

Officials remind guardians it only takes seconds for young children to drown.
